Bishop Auckland’s Annual Horticulture and Produce Show never fails to deliver a wonderful display of locally grown flowers, produce, arts and crafts.
The Show will take place in the old McIntyre’s store and Newgate Shopping Centre on Saturday 28th September 2019.
Organised by the Town Council with the help of local growers and in partnership with South Durham Enterprise Agency, Incredible Edible Bishop Auckland and Bishop Auckland and Coundon in Bloom, the Show offers over 40 classes for adults and children to get involved in.
These range from classes for leeks, onions, chrysanthemum and dahlias for serious competition growers to wonky fruit and veg, designing a poster for next year’s show and garden wildlife picture for the younger exhibitors. There is also a home produce category featuring jams, scones, pies, corsages, flower arrangements and a favourite of the judges… chocolate cake!
The Mayor of Bishop Auckland Councillor Joy Allen said: “This is the fifth year the Show has been held. We are looking for gardeners, enthusiasts, bakers, makers and creators of all ages and experience to get involved.” “The emphasis is really on enjoying what you do and joining in a fun event.” “It’s great that Bishop Celebrates Together is happening on the same day as it provides a real sense of community.”
The vegetable, flower and home produce classes will be displayed in McIntyre’s Store, while the children’s classes will be displayed in the Newgate Shopping Centre, together with other attractions including Bake a Bishop Building and Mid-Summer Cushions.
McIntyre’s will be open from 4.00 pm till 8.00 pm on Friday 27th September for entries to the vegetable, flower and home produce classes to be displayed. Children’s entries should be taken to the Newgate Shopping Centre between 4.00 pm and 5.30 pm.
Judging for all classes will take place from 9.00 am on Saturday 28th September. Dahlias and Chrysanthemum will be judged to their respective society standards. National Chrysanthemum Society Certificates will be awarded for the best chrysanthemum exhibit and best vase of chrysanthemums. National Dahlia Society Certificates will be awarded for best exhibit of dahlias (silver) and best vase of dahlias (bronze).
McIntyre’s will be open from 12.00 noon until 3.00 pm on Saturday 29th September for viewing and to discover who has been awarded prizes. Attractions in Newgate Shopping Centre will be available for viewing when the centre opens until 3.00 pm.
Presentations will be made by the Mayor at 2.30 pm in McIntyre’s followed by an auction of most of the produce at 3.00 pm. All money raised by the auction will be donated to the Mayor’s chosen charity, The Angel Trust.
