It is with great sadness we share the news of the sad passing of Councillor Dave Fleming who represented Henknowle Ward. Councillor Fleming passed away peacefully on 19th June 2021 surrounded by his loved ones after a short illness.
Councillor Fleming, or Dave to those who knew him, has been a valued and greatly respected member of Bishop Auckland Town Council for over 7 years and was Mayor of Bishop Auckland in 2013 and again in 2018. Being a member of the Town Council was a proud achievement for Councillor Fleming and he was always a positive voice for the Officers of the Council and showed unwavering support for the aims and aspirations of the Town Council to help improve Bishop Auckland. Dave will be sadly missed by all.
Mayor of Bishop Auckland Councillor Katie Eliot has said “It is with heavy hearts we learnt of the passing of Councillor Fleming. Dave was a great asset to not only the Town Council but to Bishop Auckland as a whole. He worked tirelessly for the town and his voluntary work with Woodhouse Close Community Church Foodbank helped hundreds of people and families across the town. He is a great loss and we will really miss him.”
There are great stories of Dave during his time as both Town Councillor and as Mayor, he certainly wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. From manning stalls at the Food Festival, coordinating fund raising activities, undertaking allotment site visits where he was often seen checking out the taps as tribute to his younger days as plumbing apprentice, washing the dishes at events or simply being willing to help out anyone who needed it, there was never anything that was too much trouble.
Our thoughts are with Councillor Fleming’s family and friends at this sad time.
