Bishop Auckland is awash with rainbows ahead of the first NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers Day on Monday 5th July 2021, coordinated with Bishop Auckland Town Council, and it’s not too late to join in.
The 5th July 1948 was an historic moment in our country’s history, as it was the day our pioneering National Health Service (NHS) was born, bringing free healthcare to all. And we have treasured it every year since, but never more so than from March 2020 when the Coronavirus pandemic gripped the UK and changed everyone’s lives completely.
A range of celebrations are taking place on Monday 5th July, including rainbow decorations created to show thanks to the NHS and frontline workers. Bishop Auckland Town Council are encouraging people to share their displays and pictures can be sent in via the Facebook page, or via email. There are downloadable colouring sheets on the council website and Facebook page.
School and nursery children from six schools across the town have already supplied fabulous pictures to decorate the window of the Town Council Offices. The rainbow panels are all highly decorated and show off what the young people of the town feel about our NHS Heroes. The Local WI have crafted a lovely banner which can be seen in the window of Number42 in the market place. The Auckland Project will also have a celebration flag flying to show support across the town. The Auckland Project has worked in partnership with Bishop Auckland Town Council to support the event.
Businesses such as ‘Just Like Grandmas’ on Fore Bondgate, and community groups like ‘Bishop Auckland – the Big Neighbourhood Windowland Trail’ have all been joining in with rainbow displays, to give thanks to those who have worked tirelessly in the NHS and on the Frontline.
The new Mayor of Bishop Auckland, Councillor Katie Eliot, said:
“It is lovely to see so many people displaying rainbows to give thanks for the NHS, and it is not too late to get involved. I encourage more people to get crafting over the weekend, and spread a little bit of cheer. Being involved in the first annual NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers Day is really important to me as the NHS is very close to my heart. I hope we can grow these celebrations as a town to show our appreciation for the invaluable work which NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers do.”
There is still all weekend to get your windows decorated, to show your support. There are some templates available to download on the website and on Bishop Auckland Town Council’ Facebook Page. You can share the pictures of your displays via Facebook or by emailing them to council@bishopauckland-tc.gov.uk
Socially distanced garden parties, afternoon teas, doorstep clapping and the ringing of Church bells is encouraged at 8pm to close the celebrations on Monday 5th July 2021.
