Councillor Dave Fleming ended his term of office as Mayor of Bishop Auckland by presenting a cheque for £5,287.93 to his charity, Woodhouse Close Foodbank, at the Annual Meeting of the Town Council on Tuesday 7th May 2019.

Dave said: “I am delighted to have raised funds for the Foodbank during my term of office and thank everyone that have been so kind to support me by making donations and attending fundraising events.  The Foodbank is a much needed resource that offers comfort and support to those who are in the most need.  My wife and I have been involved with the Foodbank for many years and will continue to support this very worthy cause beyond my term as Mayor.”

Anne Ramshaw, Church Centre Manager said: “We would like to thank the Mayor of Bishop Auckland Town Council, Cllr. David Fleming for choosing the Crisis Intervention Project (Foodbank) as his chosen charity in his term of office.  This money raised will enable Woodhouse Close Church Community Centre to continue to support local people who are facing financial hardship and crisis situations. From 2016 to date we have seen an increase of 85.25% by users in support needed, by either food parcels, utilities assistance, help with essential household items or signposting on to other organisations and agencies depending on the issues faced by those in need. We greatly appreciate all the donations and support given to help our Crisis Intervention Project.”

 

The Mayor, Councillor David Fleming presented a cheque for £500 to the Junior Team members of the Bishop Auckland Cricket Club, on Friday 12th April 2019.

This grant was awarded from Bishop Auckland Town Council’s Community Fund, to help towards the purchase of new mobile cricket net for the Club.

Bishop Auckland Cricket Club currently has over 200 members and is encouraging players of all ages and abilities to be involved, hone their skills and increase their enjoyment of the game.

Mayor Dave Fleming said: “It is a privilege to award this grant to the Club and was fantastic to see the Junior Team using the new cricket nets during their training session.”

The Town Council has allocated up to £5,000 to support local organisations working for the benefit of the residents of Bishop Auckland. Community groups and local charities are invited to apply for grants of up to £500.

Local Irish band Share the Darkness – ‘More Irish than a Dublin Pub’ raised the roof at the Park Head Hotel in Bishop Auckland on Saturday 16th March, helping to boost funds for Mayor of Bishop Auckland’s chosen charity, the Woodhouse Close Community Foodbank.

The total amount raised in aid of the Woodhouse Close Community Foodbank was £948.

Mayor David Fleming said:

“I would like to give a huge thank you to Claire and Tony Gibbons from the Park Head Hotel and to Share the Darkness, who made the evening such a great success.”

“I’d also like to give a special thanks to all of the guests who attended the event.  The amount raised is a fantastic example of the goodwill the local community has for charity fundraising.”

 

The Mayor, Councillor David Fleming presented a cheque for £100 to members of the Bishop Auckland Table Tennis Club on Wednesday 20^th March 2019.  This grant was awarded from Bishop Auckland Town Council’s Community Fund to provide the Club with new table tennis nets.

Each week over 350 people access the Club and it offers weekly Junior coaching, Adult Social and coaching sessions, Disability sessions and performance sessions for all ages and abilities.  The club is committed to continue to provide a place where everyone can access table tennis and the benefits associated with being a sports club and family.

Matt Porter, Club Chairman said: “The grant from the Town Council has allowed us to replace the nets on the Clubs table tennis tables.”  “The tables go through a lot of use each day, with us being open for 30 hours per week and the club caters for a whole range of ages and abilities.”

The Mayor, Councillor David Fleming presented a cheque for £210 to members of the Bishop Auckland Healthy Heartbeat Support Group on Tuesday 19^th March 2019.  This grant was awarded from Bishop Auckland Town Council’s Community Fund to assist with transport, for a group visit to Darlington Hippodrome Theatre.

The group currently has over twenty members that meet every Tuesday at Henknowle Community Centre, Bishop Auckland.  This is the only group in the area that provides after care and support to heart failure patients.

The Mayor’s Charity Ball held at Bishop Auckland Town Hall on Friday 22^nd February proved to be a successful evening.

Guests enjoyed the glitz and glamour of the event, including a three-course meal, dancing and musical entertainment by Soul Band, The Smokin’ Spitfires.

Including pledges made on the evening, around £1,400 was raised in aid of the Mayor’s chosen charity, Woodhouse Close Community Food Bank.

Various fundraising activities were held throughout the evening, including a raffle, a game of Heads & Tails and a round of pitch-and-toss, all contributing to the total raised.  Many generous donations were made by local businesses.

Councillor Fleming said:
“What a fantastic evening and I am utterly overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone who attended.”

 “There are so many people I would like to thank that made the Ball such a success, firstly I would like to thank Barclays Bank for match funding the event, to each of the individuals and local businesses in the town who donated raffle prizes, to each of the staff at the Town Hall for all of their hard work and to everyone who came along on the evening.”

 “Without their generosity and support, this amount would not have been possible.”
