As his term as 18th Mayor of Bishop Auckland comes to a close (26th May 2026), Councillor Sam Zair has reflected on a rewarding year in office, marked by strong community engagement and significant fundraising achievements.
During his mayoral year, Councillor Zair has proudly represented Bishop Auckland at a wide range of civic events, supporting local organisations, volunteers and residents, and championing the town across County Durham and beyond. A particular highlight of his year has been his fundraising efforts in support of Butterwick Hospice Bishop Auckland, for which he has raised an impressive £4,500.
Councillor Zair said: “It has been a tremendous honour to serve as 18th Mayor of Bishop Auckland. I have had the privilege of meeting so many inspiring people who work tirelessly to support our community. I am especially proud to have raised £4,500 for Butterwick Hospice, an organisation that provides vital care and support to families at the most difficult times.”
Throughout his tenure, the Mayor has focused on bringing people together, recognising the contribution of volunteers, and promoting the positive work taking place across the town.
Councillor Zair added: “I would like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my year in office – from fellow councillors and staff to community groups and residents. Bishop Auckland is a town with a strong sense of community, and it has been a privilege to serve it as Mayor. I give Cllr Siddle my best wishes as he takes over as Mayor, after being my deputy for the last 12 months.”
As the Council prepares to welcome its new Mayor for 2026–2027, Councillor Zair leaves the role having made a meaningful contribution to the town and to an important local charity. Cllr Zair will Chair the Town Councils Policy and Resources Committee for the 2026-27 year ahead.
