(Temporary Road Closure, Prohibition of Driving and No Right Turn) Order
2026

Durham County Council on 4/9/2026 made the above Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road in the manner describe.

Phase 1: Road Closure (Closed to Vehicular Traffic) a 160 metre length of Newgate Street/Cockton Hill Road extending south between its junctions with side Newgate/Union Street and Escomb Road, incorporating a 40 metre length of Bob Hardisty Drive, extending west from the roundabout junction of Newgate Street/Cockton Hill Road and a 40 metre length of side 229 Newgate Street and side 1 South View.

Phase 2: Road Closure (Closed to Vehicular Traffic) Prohibition of Driving and No Right Turn a 390 metre length of Newgate Street extending south from its junction with Princes Street to its junction with the mini roundabout at Bob Hardisty Drive, including a prohibition of driving restriction to westbound traffic between Kingsway and Princes Street Roundabout, to include a no right turn restriction from Kingsway to enable phased carriageway resurfacing works to be undertaken.

An alternative route will be available to vehicular traffic from the:

1. Northern side of the closure from Kingsway/North Bondgate/Market Place east on Durham Road, then south west on A688 and west on B6282 St Andrews Road leading to Cockton Hill Road, to the southern side of the closure and vice versa.

2. North eastern side of the closure from A689 South Church Road, north on Kingsway, north west through Market Place, west on North Bondgate, south on A689 to Princes Street Roundabout to the western side of the closure, or continuing south and east on Bob Hardisty Drive to Newgate Street/Cockton Hill Road Roundabout and vice versa.

The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months.

The proposed works are required from Monday 21/9/2026 and for the duration of the works anticipated to be 3 weeks, splitting the works across two separate weeks with a one week gap in between. Phase 1 between 11.15 pm and 5.00 pm, with Phase 2 between 8.00 pm and 6.00 am.

On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
