Call to Action: Volunteers needed for community hanging basket planting

21 May 2025

Bishop Auckland Town Council are seeking volunteers to come forward and help to re-plant the hanging baskets for Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland.

The current basket provision was not fit for purpose and were unsightly.  The Town Council have been liaising with Durham County Council on this matter for some time, and are now able to offer a solution, but they need the support of the community.

Mayor of Bishop Auckland, Cllr Sam Zair said: “It is fair to say all of us were unhappy with the hanging baskets.  The Town Council have funded the hanging baskets from Theatre Corner to Station Bridge on Newgate Street for many years, with Market Place to Theatre Corner being provided by Durham County Council and the local DCC Members budgets.”

“We have always worked in partnership with DCC for their supply, ensuring consistency across the length of Newgate Street.  In 2024 the baskets were installed using a sustainability method, which had been trialled elsewhere, therefore they were expected to last two years; however, this method has proved ineffective for Newgate Street. As we understand it the wind conditions in Newgate Street, the winter followed by the very dry and warm spring has caused them to deteriorate beyond repair. I am pleased that the Town Council are able to offer a positive solution to this issue.”

Chair of Allotment and Environment Committee Cllr Michael Siddle said: “By using a local nursery and working with the community we will be able to re-plant the baskets for the whole street, not just Theatre Corner to Station Bridge.  Once they are re-planted DCC are going to re-hang them for us, once again having healthy vibrant baskets on Newgate Street.  This community collaboration is something we hope to extend in the future to help re-establish pride in our Town.

The Town Council had the baskets removed, and they are working with a local nursery to supply stock for re-planting, however this is where they need the help of the community.

They are asking any willing volunteers to come along to the Town Council Offices on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th May 2025 between 10.30am – 3pm to help replenish the baskets.

For 2025-26 financial year the Town Council are sponsoring the supply of all planters across the Market Place and town area, and the flower beds on Bob Hardisty Drive as well as the watering of the hanging baskets once they are re-hung.

Volunteers are asked to arrive at the Town Council from 10.30am wearing appropriate clothing, for gardening work. All equipment will be provided, along with refreshments.
